I'm a professional diesel mechanic, and I will not buy any other impact but this one. My first one lasted me for 10 years, through drops, kicks, no oiling, etc. I only don't have it anymore because I moved and sold it to a friend who still uses it. I have put this thing head to head with impacts 3 times the price of this one, and it has always been the strongest and most powerful. Most of the people in my last shop borrowed mine because it was the most powerful in the shop, and nearly everyone at my new shop has one. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

HE says he would recommend it to ANYONE! great price, too.

I needed a impact wrench for rotating my tires. Originally I bought a Harbor Freight Special...... and it wouldn't turn the lug nuts on my Silverado or Trailblazer for nothing. I bought this baby with my money from Christmas and I am very happy. I rotated my tires this weekend without a problem! I was concerned with the compressor I had. I was worried it wasn't big enough for tools like a impact wrench. I have a Makita MAC2400 4.2 CFM and it was good enough for this wrench. So far I highly recommend!

Gentlemen,
I recently purchased this impact gun, which would be my first. I must say that i love the power. I use it for tire rotation, brake jobs, crank pulley bolt removal, etc. The torque is great; I can't even turn lug nuts any further than this tool can by hand. The power selector knob is great for varying power to the socket. I bought the IR 14pc socket set (metric), which by the way, are beautiful! too bad the finish gets messed up as you use them.
I chose this gun over a Craftsman impact, the particular one could not be rebuilt with a kit like this one can. Beutiful aluminum finish on the body, I think I will buy a protective boot for it.
6.) Side by Side Comparison

Background:
I decided to replace my own brakes for the first time because I would rather spend the money on tools, knowledge, experience so I can do it myself for the rest of my life. I was able to get the calipers off but the bolts holding the caliper bracket wouldn't give. Heat, quenching, PB Blaster, nothing would move these bolts. I knew I needed an impact wrench.
Side by Side:
I first bought the Coleman Powermate 024-0077CT impact wrench because it was cheap and the specs seemed good to me. I thought 250lb of torque (Supposedly) would be enough to remove those stubborn bolts. No joy. The Coleman had a hard time with the lugnuts and didn't move the caliper bracket bolts at all.
I went to a local store and purchased this Ingersoll Rand 231C wrench. I got it home and it buzzed those bolts out like they were only in finger tight! I made no changes to the air compressor and all of the other parts (e.g. air hose, sockets, etc.) were the same.
Results:
You really do get what you pay for. I only wish I would have read the Amazon reviews before I wasted money on the Coleman. Oh, and I paid approx $50 more than Amazon price for the IR wrench locally. :(

Let me first say for $109--THIS IS A STEAL. Price other 1200 ft lb torque wrenches and you will see that $299 and above is common place. As a matter of fact for $20-$30 more than your basic impact (300-500 ft lbs.) wrench that will leave you disappointed because it will never loosen tight bolts you would be crazy to buy anything else. If you are looking for a professional quality wrench that will remove anything you throw at it this is the impact wrench for you. I recently did a front brake job. My impact wrench that came with my tank was not even getting close to removing my tire lug nuts. Obviously, when I had new tires put on the service center got lazy and used a powerful impact wrench to install the lug nuts. There was no way I was getting them off with a breaker bar and I am 230 lbs. and not a small man. I figured it was time to upgrade and for the money I save on doing rotors/pads/calipers myself this gun paid for itself within 5 minutes. This gun ripped those lug nuts off instantly and made my job very easy. Nothing is more frustrating than banging your hands, sweating, breathing hard, killing your back, standing on breaker bars, only to have the bolts stay in place. Save your body and your time....get this wrench!!! If your service department uses their professional wrenches to tighten bolts...you have this beauty to at your disposal to quickly and easily get the job done.
As noted in the spec of this gun the forward torque will not be nearly as powerful as the loosening torque. However, when I installed the tires and used this to put the lugs back on....I could barely even turn them. Plenty of power to tighten anything....and more than enough power to loosen anything "stuck" $109---ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! Awesome wrench.

The first thing I do with any new tool is to grasp a full understanding of maintenance and care before using. The many professionals who rave about the 231C are right about quality, durability and price. Here are a few things I discovered that are not mentioned. The Product Information manual is a runt. Inside the front cover is a small diagram, less than 2 inches square, showing the tool and all lubrication points using tiny icons which I found to be somewhat confusing. So I contacted IR customer service for clarification. What a surprisingly courteous and helpful reply I received. They were great and answered every question I had. I've used impact wrenches all of my life. The 231C is a prize and I wanted to treat it right. Here's what I learned. Complete lubrication of the 231C is done at the factory. Since the owner's manual also covers the 231H and the 244A, the one diagram shows the lube points for all models. There is only one grease port on the back of the 231C. Add grease after 40 hours of use. If you do not have an in-line lubricator on your pressure hose, add 3 drops of oil/air tool lubricant to the air intake port every 6 to 8 hours or daily. That's all. IR offers an Impact Wrench Care Kit and it is sold by Amazon.Com. It includes the grease gun, heavy duty impact wrench grease (105-4T) and air tool lubricant (10Z4) . If you want the best, deserve the best, buy the best.

Does exactly what it's supposed to do and does it well.
High torque, fast, easy on and off with sockets/extensions, and quality construction. It even *sounds* good when you use it, LOL! Considering the price and quality/performance, this is a terrific value.
It IS loud though; be smart and use some kind of noise suppression while using this fine tool.
(10 years ago I bought a Goodwrench brand air impact wrench and can't believe I put up with its terrible performance for all these years. Its inability to remove tight nuts caused me untold hours of lost time (even days) and agony. I never looked for a better quality impact wrench b/c I thought it would cost me several hundreds of dollars, which I could not justify. Finally one day recently, faced with an axel nut that would not come off, I got on the computer and started researching, never suspecting that I could buy an Ingersol Rand impact wrench for a very reasonable price. Ordered it from Amazon, and a few days later hooked it up to the same air compressor, same long length of hose, same pressure as the Goodwrench, and the same axel nut: BLAP! and it was off, no sweat. Laughably easy. This tool is a joy to use, and the feeling of having bought a great tool for a very good price gave me that rare good feeling of SATISFACTION!)

I tried and returned 2 other models before purchasing this.
(1) from Harbor Freight and (1) from Sears.
The 1st 2 wouldn't remove the lug nuts from any of my vehicles.
In fact I could grab the socket attached and prevent the wrench from even turning.
I wouldn't dare try that with this wrench!
If you're looking for something to remove lug nuts this is it.
I like the way you can independently set the amount of power in each direction.

I am usually a person that researches everything to death before I make a purchase, this drives my girlfriend crazy, however for the purchase of an impact wrench for some reason I had a brain melt down and simply bought the $40 Craftsman unit from Sears. This wrench was rated at 350 ft/lbs yet it couldn't even begin to loosen the lugs on my truck tires. Thinking that maybe they were on too tight as they had just been replaced on the truck while in the shop I tried again after tightening by hand to the same result. Never one to be discouraged I decided to test it out to put the lugs back on and found that I still had to hand tighten the lugs as they were still too loose for my comfort. I returned the Craftsman wrench the next day, slapped myself, then began the research I should have done at the get-go. I came across this jewel and after a bit more reading decided that this was to be my next purchase and I'm glad that I did. I recieved this wrench and tested it out and was very satisfied with the results. Plenty of power in both forward and reverse to get what I need to do DONE!
The moral of this story is simple, when it comes to air tools as with other big purchases, do your homework! The Ingersoll Rand 321 is a great tool for the price and when dealing with impact wrenches, price usually does mean better quality!

After reading the reviews here, I bought the unit a couple weeks ago after total failure of a Chinese model sold by Harbor Freight that could not even remove wheel lugs.
Big challange was going to be removing a huge nut holding the crankshaft pully on a 10 year car I just bought. The web had horror stories of how hard it was to remove that nut, rigs built to hold the crankshaft in place breaking etc.. Sounded like a great acid test to me.
Bought the correct sized socket and went at it. Nothing. Hit the button again. Lot of whacking, but no movement. That is when I noticed I had it set for tighting. Duh!!!!! Flipped the switch to loosen and tried again.
1/2 second later the nut is in my hand after surrendering faster than an Iraqi Republican Guard member. And it did not even move the crank when tightening or loosening (important when doing timing belts).
Best of all, it uses 1/4th the air the cheap unit took. Very efficent.
Took the brand new Harbor Frieght Chinese unit and tossed it on the metal pile at the town landfill later in the day. It's carrying case holds the Ingersoll-Rand nicely since it is a lot smaller/lighter.
Quality unit at an unbelievable price. You cannot go wrong with this unit!

The Ingersoll - Rand 231C 1/2 inch impact wrench is made in China. Since I already own a Chinese impact wrench, there's no point in owning another. The point was to replace the low quality chinese tool with something better. Yes, I was looking for an upgrade, and the IR 231C isn't it. I thought Ingersoll - Rand's products were made in the US, why would they start manufacturing in China? It will only ruin their name, and in fact already has with this customer. However, this does explain the low price (which is actually quite high for a made in China impact). I am willing to pay up to $400 if needed for a high quality impact wrench, but it will not be from IR. Out of the box, it looks and feels like typical Chinese tools. I will return it, and never buy anything IR makes ever again.
Here's the best review I can give considering I never used the product, but did give it a good look it over.
It's very heavy, and if you ever needed to use it every day, I wouldn't recommend it for this reason alone. I think the specs say it's about 5lb, it has got to be more, I will weigh it and get back to you.
Out of the box the tool looks like it was 30 over years old. It appeared worn, even used, yet the thing is brand new.
The torque/pressure control on the side is very stiff and could not be turned by my fingers, and feels low in quality. (note: my hands are quite strong, but that knob needed nearly a foot pound just to turn)
The finish is dull, and not polished well. Tool was covered in thick oil, and black stuff, inside an open ended plastic bag stuck to the gun. You would need to clean it right out of the box. The picture on this web page makes the tool look much nicer than it really is.
Trigger is loose, wobbly, thin, is plastic, and feels weak. It has nearly no spring pressure. The trigger performs like the ones found on childerns' toys.
1/2" anvil doesn't have a spring ball detent. How could sockets stay on tight?
Tool does not come with an air fitting, just a threaded socket in the handle. If you don't have this fitting, you would need to buy that before using it.
Tool does not come with a storage case.
It doesn't ship with any socket tools, oil, or accessories. Just a red cardboard box (that was oil stained), plastic bag, and a few documents (The document booklet edges were bent over because they were longer than the box.)
Impact wrench has a tiny decal on the back of the gun that says "Made in China". It could be removed, and no one would think you own a Chinese tool. I question the tool's resale value.
Is the tool junk? I don't know, and with over $100 on the line here, I am not going to find out. I will find a non-Chinese made air impact gun even if I have to buy it used.
